What should I know about AI-powered alt text?

  • Alt text is automatically generated when you use an asset in a Gallery, Map, Itinerary, single asset embed, or share link.

  • Generated descriptions focus on travel-related content.

  • Each description stays within the 150-character accessibility standard.

  • Alt text is created in alignment with WCAG 2.1 Level AA and ADA Title III accessibility guidelines.

  • AI-generated alt text applies to images used in the platform, embeds, and social media.

  • You don't need to write descriptions one by one for assets you place in these features.

Can I generate or edit alt text for an asset?

Yes. Alt text is generated automatically when you use an asset in a Gallery, Map, Itinerary, single asset embed, or share link. If an asset hasn't been used in one of these yet, or you'd like alt text in place sooner, you can generate it yourself in the Library. You can also write or edit alt text manually at any time to improve clarity or add more context.

To generate alt text:

  1. Click the asset to open it.

  2. Click the pencil icon to edit.

  3. Scroll down to Alt Text and click the Generate button.

To edit alt text:

  1. Click the asset to open the asset detail window.

  2. Scroll down to Alt Text.

  3. Edit the description to add or adjust context.

  4. Click Save.

Once you save, your change applies automatically everywhere that image and its alt text appear, including galleries, embeds, and social media. You don't need to update each placement individually.

How does alt text work?

For your visitors, alt text powers assistive technology like screen readers. When someone browses a gallery with a screen reader on, each image's description is read aloud. This makes your galleries more inclusive for every visitor and more discoverable in search.

Can alt text be regenerated by AI?

Currently, AI-generated alt text cannot be regenerated once it has been created. If you want to change the description, you'll need to manually update the text.

Does this apply to video assets?

AI-powered alt text currently applies to image assets only. Accessibility improvements for video assets are part of CrowdRiff's ongoing development efforts.
