Hard Drive Data Migration: Important Reminders

Hard drive migration is a physical data transfer option where we ship you a drive to load your files onto and return to us for upload into the platform. Before getting started, review the key policies and risks below.

Written by Carm Ang

Who owns the hard drive?

The drive belongs to us. We ship it to you on loan for the sole purpose of completing your data migration. Once your files have been successfully uploaded into the platform, we'll ask you to ship it back.

  • Do not keep, reformat, or repurpose the drive

  • Return shipping instructions will be provided after your upload is confirmed

Do I need to keep my own backup?

Yes - always. Do not send us the only copy of your data.

Think of it like mailing a package: items can get lost, delayed, or damaged in transit. Before loading anything onto the drive, make sure your original files are backed up in at least one of the following:

  • Cloud storage (e.g., Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud)

  • A local external drive

  • Any other secure storage location you control

Once the drive is in transit, neither you nor we have control over what happens to it. Your backup is your safety net.

What are the risks of shipping a hard drive?

Hard drives are physical devices, and shipping carries inherent risks. Here's what we do to reduce them - and what remains outside our control:

  • What we do: We ship SSDs (solid-state drives) instead of traditional spinning drives to minimize the chance of damage during transit

  • What we can't guarantee: We cannot guarantee a drive will arrive undamaged, or that data won't be affected during shipping

This is why keeping your own backup is so important. Even in a worst-case scenario, your files stay safe.

What am I confirming by proceeding?

By moving forward with the hard drive migration option, you confirm that you have:

  • Read and understood the ownership, backup, and shipping risk policies above

  • Backed up your original files before loading anything onto the drive

  • Agreed to return the drive after your upload is complete
