Why are some Reels not being added to CrowdRiff?

Meta may block Reels from CrowdRiff when a user's download setting is off. See what's affected and steps you can take.

Meta has recently shared more detail about why certain Instagram Reels get blocked from being brought into CrowdRiff. Alongside copyright restrictions, Meta also blocks a Reel when the Instagram user has their Reels download setting turned off. This is a privacy setting each Instagram user controls individually, and it can only be changed in the Instagram mobile app.

What's impacted?

Reels can be blocked in any flow where CrowdRiff has to pull the asset from Instagram:

  • Social trackers: followed accounts and hashtags

  • @mentions

  • Rights requests where the asset isn't already in CrowdRiff (Saved URLs and Instagram Replies)

What's not impacted?

You'll still receive Reels normally in these cases:

  • Your own connected social accounts

  • Posts from accounts who have authorized you through the Connect Portal

❗Heads up: Even for Connect Portal accounts, @mentions and tags might still be impacted. The authorization covers their own posts, not content where they've been mentioned or tagged by someone else.

What can I do about it?

A few steps help you capture the content you want:

  • Encourage partners to connect through the Connect Portal. This is the most reliable way to receive all of their posts.

  • Ask partners to double-check their Reels download setting in the Instagram mobile app so it reflects what they actually want. See Instagram's guide: https://help.instagram.com/520831036611383

  • Ask content creators to send you the original file or upload it to a Collector.

How do I check if a specific Reel is affected?

You can confirm it directly on Instagram:

  1. Open the Reel and tap Share.

  2. Scroll right through the share options.

  3. Look for a Download button. If there's no Download button, the download setting is off and the Reel will be blocked.
